It used to be widely believed that Flash was a hindrance to search engine results. This is no longer the case. The secret is to provide alternative content that is provided via javascript for users who do not have Flash installed. This content is also available for hand-held personal devices such as iPhones or iPods, which are becoming an increasingly popular means of accessing the Internet. Unfortunately, many of these devices do not support Flash (a deplorable situation that will hopefully be corrected in the near future). In the meantime, it is important to provide alternative content that can be seen if Flash is not available.

Another reason for providing alternative content is to accommodate users with disabilities. For these potential customers, visual elements such as photographs or Flash animations are useless. Many of these people utilize software that "reads" live text and turns it into audio content that can be heard by the seeing impaired. So providing textual alternative content provides dual purposes - making a Flash site accessible to both search engines and to users with disabilities.

As an example, the content you are reading right now is only available because you are using a browser or device that does not support Flash. If your browser were Flash compatible, you would be viewing an all-Flash site. And yet, this text is what search engines use to index the site. If you were viewing this site using Flash, you would be unaware that the search engines found the site by utilizing this alternate content!
